Touring Lake Tahoe’s awe-inspiring forests and mountains by snowmobile is one of the most versatile and rewarding ways to experience our winter wonderland. Along the way stop and take in the gorgeous vistas with eagle-eye views of Lake Tahoe. Often the days are clear and crisp with blankets of fresh snow. The forests and meadows are peacefully still with the snow glistening in the sunlight. This is an excellent way to get away from the crowds and immerse you in the wonder of nature. It’s also a very exhilarating and fun experience as you carve steep turns in deep powder, blast full throttle across frozen lakes and meadows, and climb steep hills stopping at the top to take in panoramic views. The most appropriate sleds for back country snowmobile travel in the Tahoe wilderness areas have powerful 600 to 800 cc two-stroke engines and long 144 to 151 inch tracks with 2 inch lugs. This provides enough power and traction for the deep snow that is commonly encountered off track. If you will only be running on groomed trails, regular trail sleds will be adequate.
Winter travel, beautiful and serene though it can be, has a dangerous side that takes many winter travelers by surprise. Avalanches, sudden storms, hypothermia, and awkward snow conditions can be life threatening. The best way to protect yourself from these hazards is to learn as much as you can about them before you go. Books, classes, and videos on back-country trekking are available in local libraries, outdoor stores, and book shops. Be sure to leave a detailed itinerary with friends before you head out, and do your research before you hit the trails.
